FIREWOOD COLLECTING AT WEST POINT
NOTE: As of 10/01/2020 West Point offers two FW permits - 1. GARRARD RD PERMIT & 2. TRAINING AREA PERMIT - both available ONLY here on the iSportsman website. ** ACCESS IS ON A TRIAL BASIS ** Please be responsible so program may grow and succeed.
Purchase your firewood permit here on WestPoint.iSportsman.Net. An individual looking to purchase a firewood permit must first create an iSportsman account which must then be approved by a West Point iSportsman administrator. Finally, as a new user, the individual must complete the mandatory safety brief (an annual requirement). Once the user has created an account and completed the mandatory safety brief, the user may purchase a permit on iSportsman via credit card. In-person permit sales at West Point have been discontinued.
ELIGIBITY
West Point controls and vets prospective users in order to prevent interference with the military mission, to ensure safety and sustainability, and to prevent an overexploitation of natural resources. As such, West Point only permits users to collect wood who meet specific criteria to qualifty under one of a number of different eligible customer types. ACCESS
1. REGISTER YOUR ACCOUNT - If an individual is a new user, the new users registers a new account HERE and awaits an administrator to vet and approve it. Approval of the new account gives the user a Background validation, which for most users will expire after a few years and require reapproval.
2. REVIEW SAFETY BRIEF - Once an account has been approved a user will be notified by e-mail. The user will then log on to his/her account and complete the mandatory safety brief (an annual requirement). Completing the safety brieg gives the user the Safety Brief validation, good for one year.
3. PURCHASE YOUR PERMIT - A user in good standing with both a Background validation and Safety Brief validation may purchase a permit if that user does not already have an active copy of the same permit already. Users attempting to buy firewood permits should select correct permit. (see Permits below)
PERMITS
1. GARRARD ROAD FIREWOOD COLLECTION PERMIT: will continue to be available as free twelve month permits for landscape waste ONLY on Garrard Road. Permits last twelve months from day of purchase. There is no limit to how much firewood you can collect. All collected firewood shall be for personal use only. Available quantity is not guaranteed as supply originates from tree trimming, cleaning, and removal on Post. Click HERE for an access map. 2. TRAINING AREA FIREWOOD COLLECTION PERMIT: newly available as a $5.00 daily permit for collection of dead and downed wood ONLY in Training Areas T1, T2, U1, U2, X & Y, pending military training and peak hunting season. Permits last only for day of purchase. There is no limit to how much firewood you can collect. All collected firewood shall be for personal use only. However, only the processing of dead and down wood is permitted. There shall be no felling of live, standing dead, or leaning trees. Click HERE (COMING SOON) for an access map. CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT
FOR GARRARD RD PERMIT
While Check-In & Check-Out are not required at Garrard Rd, it is useful for Natural Resources Branch staff for permitees to check in and check out here so that permitees can report harvest/take. Understanding use and take allows Natural Resource Branch staff to better manage woodcutting permits and the woodcutting program.
FOR TRAINING AREA PERMIT

Check-In on iSportation Before Entering Area: All permitees and guests/walkers will check in on iSportsman prior to entering Training Area. Users must be in the field within one hour of checking in or must otherwise check out of the area on iSportsman.

Check-Out, Check-In on iSportsman when Changing Areas: All permitees changing from one training area to another must first check out of the area they are exiting on iSportsman and then check in to the new area they are entering.

Check-Out on iSportsman After Exiting Area: All permitees and guests/walkers will check out on iSportsman when exiting Training Area. Users must be checked out within one hour of exiting the area.
ACTIVITY HOURS & AVAILABILITY
FOR ALL FIREWOOD PERMITS
WOODCUTTING HOURS: 1/2 HR BEFORE SUNRISE - 1/2 HR AFTER SUNSET
A permitee may collect firewood ONLY between the times of one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. Permitees should be mindful of time required to load vehicle, leave area when cutting.
FOR TRAINING AREA PERMITS
Firewood permits in training areas MAY be turned off or limited during peak hunting seasons such as during peak pheasant stocking times in October and November as well as during Regular Firearms Big Game Season in November and December.
RULES & REGULATIONS
GENERAL RULES & REGULATIONS FOR ALL FIREWOOD PERMITS

Transport Limit: Firewood shall not be moved more than 50 miles from point of origin nor out of state to help prevent spread of invasive species per NYSDEC regulations. Learn more HERE.

Firewood Collection Only: Permits collecting firewood only and not for hunting or other activities. No hunting implements are allowed in vehicle while collecting firewood.

Do no harm: The permitee shall not damage live vegetation, wildlife, roads, road infrastructure, or other federal assetts. Permit holders will be held liable for any damage.

Wood Quantity/Quality Guarantees: West Point makes no guarantees to permitees regarding either the available quantity of firewood or quality of available firewood including type of wood, condition of wood, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All PPE will be worn while using chainsaws incl chaps, hardhat, ear & eye protection, over-ankle boots /w toe protection, high visibility clothing, etc.

Required Paperwork: All permitees will have: 1) WP permit, 2) WP vehicle pass 3) completed DEC "Self Issued Untreated Firewood Transport & Possession" Form. Learn more HERE

Other Individuals: Firewood permits apply only to permitee. Permits may not be transferred. Other individuals may assist the permit holder but must travel together with permit holder in same vehicle. A trailer may be connected to the permitted vehicle.

Log Splitters, All-Terrain Vehicles & Fires Prohibited: Permitees may not bring or use log splitters or All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) at West Point under any circumstances. Permitees may not have fires at West Point under any circumstances.

Carry In, Carry Out: Permitees may not litter. All trash and refuse shall be removed from West Point. Nor may permitees leave equipment or clothing in the field, temporarily or permanently. Everything carried in must be carried out.
ADDITIONAL SPECIFIC RULES & REGULATIONS FOR TRAINING AREA PERMITS

Cut Dead & Down Wood Only: Permitees may cut and collect only trees THAT ARE DEAD AND ON THE GROUND. Permitees may not cut standing trees (alive or dead), leaning trees (alive or dead) and may NOT be cut down or any live vegetation.

Driving & Parking: Permitees shall not drive faster than 20 MPH on range roads at West Point and shall not drive faster than 10 MPH when passing troops. NO VEHICLES SHALL LEAVE OR BLOCK RANGE ROADS OR GATES (OPENED OR CLOSED).

Towing, Recovery, & Repair: West Point will not aid in any towing, recovery, or repair of vehicles. Good judgment and caution is encouraged when driving and parking anywhere at West Point, especially on range roads. Use of a winch is permissible.

Take Permit Afield, Display Vehicle Pass: All permitees going afield should have a printed or electronic copy of the firewood permit on his/her person and shall place paper copy of Vehicle Pass (printed out with permit) on driver's side windshield of vehicle.

HARVEST/TAKE REPORT
While Harvest/Take Report is not required for the Firewood Collecting activity, it is useful to Natural Resources Branch staff for permitees to report harvest/take. Understanding use and take allows Natural Resource Branch staff to better manage woodcutting permits and the woodcutting program.
VIOLATIONS: Violation of these regulations will result in loss of ALL permits at USAG WP for the current year and potential cancellation of account. A refund WILL NOT be issued for either Firewood Collection permit nor for any other West Point permit or pass.
LIABILITY: In consideration of receiving permission from the West Point Garrison Commander to gather forest products, the permit holder and all associated parties agree to release the Garrison Commander, Usag - West Point, The Department of the Army, its agents, officers, and employees of and from any and all liability, claims, demands, actions and causes of actions whatsoever arising out of, relating to, any loss damage, or injury that may be sustained by the permit holder of associated parties or property of the permit holder or associated parties while in, on, or upon the premises for these activities.
